An apostille is an official document certifying the notary who performed a particular act was a notary in good standing at the time of the notarizations. Documents that require an apostille will be destined for international countries that signed the Hague Convention. It is important to understand that the apostille does not authenticate the contents or effect of the documents in any way. The secretary of state's office can only issue the apostille. Countries that have not signed the Hague Convention and Federal documents may require additional steps to get authenticated or certified.
